Burnout Was the Signal—Now Let’s Build the Solution

🌷 June 2025 Newsletter 🌷

Welcome back, Conscious Leaders!

This month, we’re wrapping up our Burnout Learning Series and diving into the final pieces of the puzzle. We’ve named burnout for what it is—a systems crisis, not a personal failing and now, let’s explore what comes next: Sustainable leadership practices that don’t just protect your people—they propel them.

On Today's Menu:

  • 💡 A Note from Sharon—leading beyond burnout

  • 📚 Fresh Blog Bites: The case for sustainable leadership, reclaiming energy and agency, and the myth of “neutral” coaching

  • 🧠 Brain Food: this month’s reflections on self help x systems

  • 🌅 What’s on the Horizon: a better after-action review

But First, A Note From Our Founder.

Hey there, Conscious Leaders!

As we bring our Burnout Learning Series to a close, I want to share a deeper truth that readers have been reflecting back to me, wide-eyed, this month:

Burnout isn’t the problem.

It’s not. It’s a symptom. It’s the result of bodies and minds being pushed past their limit to regenerate effectively. It’s an epidemic of bodies and minds and souls and hearts refusing to be complicit in systems that no longer serve us.

We’ve tried to manage burnout like a technical problem with technical solutions (think yoga, meditation, and wellness perks) but burnout is an adaptive, evolutionary signal that leadership itself is undergoing a massive shift—from extraction to regeneration; from control to co-creation; from compliance to collaborative stewardship.

This paradigm shift in leadership requires us to rethink leadership itself.

Rethinking how we design work, how we share power, and how we build systems that honor both the humanity and the brilliance of the people in them.

The future of leadership isn’t about finding different people to put into our burnout-factories, but about building systems that don’t require us to burnout to “succeed.”

Life isn’t about surviving work, or out-efforting broken systems.
It’s about redefining what work—and leadership—can be.

With deep respect for your leadership,

Alright, Change-Makers, Let's Get to the Juicy Stuff

This Month’s Must-Reads:

A hand holds up a round wooden token with the words “WE UNDERSTAND YOUR NEEDS” printed on it, set against a bold mustard yellow background—suggesting empathy, care, and attunement to human-centered leadership.

📈 The Business Case for Sustainable Leadership: Why Fixing Burnout is a Competitive Advantage

Burnout isn’t just bad for your people—it’s bad for business. Here’s how to reframe sustainability as a strategic advantage (aka the link your exec team didn’t know they needed).

Two hands tightly gripping a planner, bound at the wrists by heavy metal chains. Set against a dark teal background, the image evokes themes of control, entrapment, and the illusion of agency—highlighting how productivity and hustle can become their own form of captivity.

Reclaiming Agency, Energy, and Power

We think if we could just control this other thing too, (time, anyone?!) we’d finally be okay. But the illusion of control is costing us everything. Here’s what to do instead.

Two people sit facing each other in wooden chairs, engaged in a serious, silent moment. The man on the left appears guarded with arms crossed and legs folded, while the woman on the right looks pensive, hand near her mouth. The mustard yellow background isolates their interaction, evoking tension or unresolved communication—suggesting themes of coaching, conflict, or power dynamics.

🗣️ The Myth of Neutral Coaching: Why ‘Staying Out of It’ Is Still Taking a Side

Coaching is not passive. You are not an empty vessel waiting to be filled. The illusion of neutrality is holding leaders like you back from the kind of real, grounded, and conscious leadership the world actually needs.

Is it possible to take too much responsibility? We say yes.

Here’s Sharon’s top book rec of the month:

by yours truly, Sharon Podobnik Peterson.

This month, we’re re-reading award-winning It’s Not (All) Your Fault. Recently named Top Social Justice Book, Top Social Change Book, and Grand Prize Winner in General Nonfiction by the Next Generation Indie Book Awards.

“When I wrote this, I was trying to name the invisible forces that keep so many of us stuck in self-blame—when really, it’s our systems that need changing. After it won, I wanted to sit with it again–not as the writer, but as a reader. If you’re navigating burnout, over-responsibility, or systems that ask too much and give too little, this one’s for you.” —Sharon Podobnik Peterson
